What do I have to do to get a Wagoneer?

30 years since ending production of the famous wood-paneled Jeep Grand Wagoneer, everyone’s favorite off-road brand has revived it (without the wood panels).

retvrn

The OG Grand Wag is credited for sparking the luxury off-roader revolution. Its only competition in the early 90s was the Range Rover, and now it seems like everyone – from Bentley to BMW, Cadillac to Lincoln, has its own leather-trimmed vehicle that can crawl over rocks.

Priced starting at $87k, the new Grand Wagoneer isn’t shy about commanding top dollar.

What’s shocking is how much the original models go for.

For example, this restored 1991 Grand Wagoneer is priced as much as a specced-out new model – at a cool $99k.

how?!

A cursory search of local classifieds turns up high-mileage, poor condition models running at around $25k and up. For reference, you could find Grand Cherokees from the same era for less than a tenth of that price.

that’ll buff out

In a recent search I found a clean 1987 Grand Wagoneer for $12,500 for sale outside of Sacramento. I went to bed thinking I’d email the seller in the morning, and sure enough, it was gone within hours.

This piece is less informative and more a cry for help.

I love the original chrome and plush interiors of the late-80s, early-90s Grand Wagoneers. I saw one on a recent trip to Seattle parked on the street and it was the absolute embodiment of #goals.

I have no interest in the new model other than as a curiosity, I’m sure it’s competent and neat the same way all $100k SUVs are these days.

Barring me investing in a towing company and boosting one off the street like Gone in 60 Seconds, what’s it gonna take for me to get a shiny old Grand Wagoneer?
